Kyle Quick – Over the years I have played at all levels and different places around the United States. I grew up in Buffalo playing for every organization and traveling around in the summer to compete in the best tournaments. At the age of 15 I left Buffalo to play at Salisbury School. That year in the Fall I played in the Mass Select League for the Neponset Valley River Rats u 18. This was an eye opening experience for me playing with and against many current and former professional NHL players. I continued that year playing at Salisbury for my sophomore and junior years in high school. My next journey for my senior year landed me in St. Louis playing for current OHL coach Jeff Brown who played over 700 games in the NHL. This was a valuable experience for me as learning the junior hockey lifestyle. That year I won the NAHL Robertson cup. The next year I again traveled back east to attend Avon Old Farms which many consider the best hockey factory in the United States producing 2 Conn Smyth winners in Jon Quick and Brian Leetch. That year again I played fall hockey for the River Rats. I landed my college commitment to Brown through playing for Avon and River Rats. That year I won the New England Championship with Avon. The next year I went to play in the USHL for the Lincoln Stars. However, this season was cut short in December when I received a concussion. The last 4 years have been spent at Brown University where injuries have ridden my success as a player, but the education which I stress to players has been of significant value for my future.
As far as coaching, I have been given the opportunity to coach the River Rats 16u tier1 and premier programs. The first year as an assistant on the Tier1 team I developed relationships with many colleges and prep coaches as they were calling me on our players. As of now 2 have committed to college and many more have moved onto prep schools. In the summer of 2014, I took a team to the 1998 Junior Chowder Cup and lost in the Semi Finals with a Buffalo based team. That weekend many of my players were contacted by prep schools and some by colleges. One of my players committed to Brown this fall from playing for me and being a dominant player in everything he did over the summer. This fall I had the honor of being the head coach of the premier team. I had to recruit the whole team in the spring and get all the players on board. As the season went on we knew we had the chance to win states, but it would be up to the kids and how consistent they played. As a tier2 team we went to a top end AAA tournament in Connecticut and lost in the quarters to a team ranked in the top 5 in the country 4-1. My goal as a coach is to get as much as I can out of my players and give them the experience and knowledge that I have and pass it on to them. Also, I want every kid to have a good spot the following year or college commitment because that shows that you did your job as a coach. |
